Updated the Toshiba Portege 3490CT to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

I bought my second Toshiba Portege 3490CT from the auction at work earlier this year. I followed the same steps as my first 3490CT to install Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Although Version 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon had been out for a while at that time, I’ve heard many users said Gutsy made their computers super slow. The laptop worked just fine in Feisty.

Recently, I read a little bit about Hardy and I recalled a comment I received on this blog about how to solve the slowness issue in Gutsy. I decided to take the plunge to upgrade. The upgrade is finally complete but there were some scary moments. Continue reading “Updated the Toshiba Portege 3490CT to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron”

D-Link RangeBooster G PC card works with Ubuntu

Since I repeated my feat of installing Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on the second laptop I got from the auction at work, I haven’t bought a wireless PC card for it. For the first laptop, I bought a TRENDnet TEW-441PC Wireless Super G PC Card for $14.99 at Circuit City and it worked flawlessly with Ubuntu. I felt hesitant to buy a different card since it is hard to tell if any other PC cards work just as well. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the TRENDnet card locally anymore. Buy online would cost me $29.99 on the Circuit City website and they don’t offer the mail-in rebate that was available for my last purchase. They do offer free shipping for orders over $24. But in the spirit of not wasting all the materials and fuel involved in shipping, I decided to look for another wireless PC card to buy locally. Ubuntu must-have utilities

Ever since I successfully installed Ubuntu on a laptop for the second time, I got a little more adventurous about customizing a few things in Ubuntu. I am quite impressed with what I did and I think they are essential to most Ubuntu users. My must-have list below is very basic. There are other must-have lists (read here and there) for advanced users, especially those who do a lot of multimedia. Continue reading “Ubuntu must-have utilities”

Successfully installed Ubuntu on another Toshiba Portege 3490CT

There was another auction at my work last week. There were a few laptops for sale but not as many as last time. Surprisingly, a Toshiba Portege 3490CT was in the lineup. There were like 7-8 of them at the last auction back in June so I thought this particular model must be all gone. The one I bought last time is visibly worn out, especially the dirty rubber nub mouse. This time around, the laptop appears in better condition. The rubber nub looks almost new. The expansion port cover opens and closes nicely. Aside from the Toshiba, I also had my eye on a 17-inch Apple PowerBook G4 that was marked “Acts up.” I am not good at repairing computers so I put a bid of $10 for the PowerBook and didn’t keep my hopes up. I am sure the Toshiba will have a good competition. I bid it for $80 although it’s $10 less than what I paid last time. In the end, I got the Toshiba while someone else wants the “Acts up” PowerBook more than I do. Continue reading “Successfully installed Ubuntu on another Toshiba Portege 3490CT”
